Patna: Didarganj Yakshi



Didarganj Yakshi (or Didarganj Chauri Bearer) is viewed as one of the finest examples of Mauryan art.The sculpture is currently housed in Patna Museum, Patna, India It is estimated to be at least 2000 years old; and is carved out of a single piece of stone.The discovery of the Didarganj Chauri Bearer was carried out on the banks of the river Ganga at Didargunj, Patna in 1917. It was moved to the Patna museum by noted archaeologist, professor and historian, Dr. J N Samaddar. This piece of art was taken around the world for display in several museums across the world. Unfortunately, its nose got chipped off during transportation in 1985, when it was being taken to Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., USA during the Festival of India exhibition.
The cancellation represents the statue.
